Diane ChungOswald AveryOswald Theodore Avery. He is a well known scientist who studied medicine and diseases.Born in 1877 in Halifax, Canada, Avery grew up with a strong religious family. His father was apastor at a Baptist Church and Avery played cornet on Sunday afternoons, which attracted moreworshippers for the church. When Avery grew up, he went to Colgate University and receivedthe nickname ‘Babe.’ With good grades and an interest in medicine, Avery then went to Collegeof Physicians and Surgeons because he found the medical research fascinating. The HoaglandLaboratory, located in Brooklyn, in 1907 accepted Avery as an associate dictatorship. Hoaglandwas the first bacterial research laboratory which studied privately, so this laboratory job was avery big deal and a huge opportunity. Avery was a professor and taught student nurses in thelaboratory. He was well-liked by his companions and colleagues, despite the fact that he did notsocialize with them for long periods of time. Avery and other scientists found a transformation inthe pneumonia bacteria, after experimenting with it. They had found transforming principle,which was identified as “sodium deoxyribonucleic” or DNA, This was a huge finding. Averyreceived many awards for finding DNA. After he retired, Avery moved to Nashville to growcloser to his brother. However, in 1954, Avery was diagnosed with liver cancer and died after ayear of suffering.Avery was a distinguished scientist of bacteria and a research physician. He was afounder of immunochemistry. Immunochemistry is a part of biochemistry concerning people’simmune systems and their responses. Avery often worked with Benjamin White, who encouragedhim to take a job as Associate Director of the Division of Bacteriology. Avery’s research wasvery well-known and caught the attention of other important scientists. However, he has turneddown many offers to continue his research and metabolic studies of pneumonia.Avery had many partners in science and this both benefited him and hindered him. First,he was not at all very sociable. He was well-liked by colleagues, but he tended to avoidsocializing for a long duration of time. At first Avery worked with White, but later he workedwith with Frederick Griffith to experiment the treatment and medicines for pneumonia. Frederickhad results, making a cure. Avery’s contributions about the DNA structure were proved, helpinghim receive an award. Griffith was Avery’s main colleague and partner, but he had many moresuch as Maclyn McCarty and Colin Munro MacLeod.Avery worked with many scientists and partners, and I believe helped him grow further asa scientist. They pushed him to think outside the box and gave their own perspectives, helpinghim learn new facts he did not know before. This could have helped Avery find his DNAdiscoveries. However, because Avery was anti-social, I do believe that working with otherscientists could have been awkward and uncomfortable for him. He has grown up to be a “lonewolf,” and this could affect how he acts around other people. In conclusion, I think Avery hadmany pros and cons with working with other scientists.Along with his awards and partners, Avery most likely faced the competitive world ofscience and the findings of DNA. The world always wants to learn and discover more. We wantto be the best that we can be. We want to be modern. With this knowledge, scientists can befrenzied to find new facts and evidence, which can lead to them being rewarded with arecognition or award. They would be remembered in history, and because of this I believe that inthe science world, it is very competitive. However, it seems that Avery was able to handle all thecompetition and was quite competitive himself, finding sodium deoxyribonucleotide.Many scientists are successful and receive awards. Avery had earned and accepted theCopley Medal and the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. The Copley Medal is adistinguished and esteemed award given to any scientist who have had phenomenalachievements. This can be given to any scientist and it does not matter what the scientificstudies. The Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research is given to any outstandingscientists. Both of these awards were given to Avery because of his contributions and finding ofDNA; this helps us understand DNA and our body even more than we did before, making usmore modernized.
